こんにちは。
今日も今日とて短文読解です。今回は、英語の学び方についてのお話。つい最近まで、英語はアメリカ発祥と思っていました。イギリスが本場なんですね。
In order to master the English language thoroughly and, consequently, to be able to really appreciate English literature, it is necessary to have a clear understanding of the Englishman’s character. It is hardly sufficient to know his manner of life without seeking to find out why he thinks and acts in the way he does.

ここは、文脈から大事な部分を判断し、without以降をあとに持ってくるのが正解らしい。
意外と間違えるwithoutの使い方
withoutは「−せずに」という意味ですが、厳密に言えば「両立できる2つの行為の片方を失わずに」という場合に使われます。
ex)× I ride my bike to work without taking the subway
→同時にできない
○I watch TV without wearing glasses
→同時にできる！
模範解答
英語を完全に習得し、またその結果として、英文学をほんとうに鑑賞することができるためには、英国人の性格をはっきりと理解することが必要である。英国人の生活様式を知っても、同時に英国人がなぜあんなぐあいに物を考えたり、行動したりするかを知ろうと努めなければけっして十分ではない。
